There are two ways to filter: surface filtration and depth filtration.
Surface filtration only intercepts particles on the filter surface. It is best compared to a run-of-the-mill sieve, with everything larger than the mesh size retained in the sieve. With surface filtration, particles larger than the selected micronage are retained in the filter.
Depth filtration is a filtration technique where liquid flows through a porous structure. Any particles in the liquid are trapped by the structure. Depth filtration is ideally suited to filter out fine particles, colloids and even microorganisms.

Filter plates are generally made of cellulose and filter aids such as diatomaceous earth. They come in coarse to very fine micronages and retain particles across the full plate thickness.
This depth filtration solution is widely used in the food and beverage industry, including to clarify beer, wine or fruit juices. In the pharmaceutical industry, too, filter plates are used to achieve a high level of clarity and microbial reduction.

Filter modules are made up of multiple filter plates inside a closed module. They combine filter plates’ filtration capabilities with a hygienic design and quick safe filter changes.
It makes filter modules ideal for processes involving high volumes and where hygiene and operator safety are paramount, like in pharmaceuticals production, biotechnology and cosmetics.

Depth filter cartridges are made of wound polypropylene (melt-blown filter cartridges) or fibreglass. They trap dirt across the full thickness of the filter material. These filters come in a wide range of micronages and can be used for process water, chemical products, and industrial applications.
Filter cartridges are commonly used in water treatment as a pre-filtration step for RO. Pre-filtration protects the membrane and makes it last longer.
Filter cartridges are also regularly used for beverage products.
Precoat filters are filter systems where a ‘filter bed’ (filter cake) is created from individual filter aids such as perlite and diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr). This powder is applied to a carrier, such as a filter cartridge or filter cloth, forming a porous layer that lets the liquid through but retains particles across the full thickness of the filter bed, which is sometimes also referred to as ‘filter cake’.

The powder, i.e. the precoat, works like a depth filter. As particles are trapped, the filter layer becomes more compacted and the separation rate increases.
It is widely used in the chemical industry, in pharmaceutical processes and in the food industry (such as in the production of sugar and certain beverages). A precoat filter is effective when the liquid to be filtered contains high concentrations of solids (high contamination level) or when extremely fine filtration is needed.
A major advantage is that the filter bed can be reconstructed time and time again. And the filters can be adapted to process requirements. For product flows containing high concentrations of solids, precoat filters (with filter aids such as perlite) are a good solution.
