Every day, BÈTA industrie works on projects that are highly innovative, especially in terms of sustainability. The Netherlands targets net zero by 2050, and BÈTA industrie wants to help make that happen.
There are currently numerous projects ongoing in the Netherlands to help the country reach net zero. One of these projects is Gasunie’s WarmtelinQ project.
WarmtelinQ is an underground pipeline that will be using residual heat from industry in the port of Rotterdam to heat homes and businesses across the province of Zuid-Holland.
Half of all energy consumed in the Netherlands is used for heating, and most of that energy still comes from fossil sources such as natural gas. Of that energy used for heating, 47% is used to heat homes and businesses. Rather than venting residual heat from industry in the port of Rotterdam into the atmosphere, WarmtelinQ will harness it to heat houses, businesses and in the future even horticultural greenhouses. Given that the residual heat is a waste product, it does not contain CO2.
The underground pipeline will transport the residual heat from the port of Rotterdam via Vlaardingen to The Hague, and ultimately even on to Leiden and its surrounding municipalities. Branches to the Westland and Oostland areas are currently also being explored, as these are areas that are home to numerous horticultural businesses that could use the residual heat in their greenhouses.
In their search for the filters they need for WarmtelinQ, Gasunie approached various companies, seeking proposals based on their specifications. All the proposals were assessed based on various selection criteria and one was ultimately chosen.
